Interview
Interview for the Cynthia Weston blog.
Julia Gazdag’s ongoing interview blogproject covering independent musicians she comes across and feels compelled to share about. Julia approached me when Gayle Gold played a show at Emo’s then Beauty Bar. We happened to be playing with two of Cari’s music projects and Julia et all were following Cari around with cameras for the Independent Culture Project that focuses on music in Austin Texas.
Apologies ahead of time for the surreal sound…

Upcoming: Recording with Brent Farriss
Upcoming Recording Collaboration With Brent Fariss
The recording is mainly getting voice samples from you. I’ll have some graphic scores and text that will be just a guide for you improvise, but mainly I figure we will set up the mic and get a bunch of voice sounds. Some normal, some very close mic’ed. A wide range of things. That is why I thought you would be perfect for this. You have a wide range of vocal sounds, plus you are very open performance wise and comfortable singing…which I like. A lot of the piece is about the sensuality of the physical nature of the voice…but nothing too weird. I promise! J so it will mainly be a combination of improv and some guided sections, but it is about getting raw material that will be slightly manipulated into an electroacoustic piece. Kind of like a deena choir…if that makes sense.

Recreating the Domain
Recreating the Domain is a set of artist-created recorded walking tours of the Domain, the controversial north Austin shopping center/residence/office park. Rather than having a traditional gallery presence, visitors will be able to download the walking tours and attend the exhibition on their own time, making Recreating the Domain a permanent exhibition. Curated by Alex Keller brought to you by Church of the Friendly Ghost.
I participated in the piece “Tan bodies” by Bill Bridges (15.2 MB)

Lady Friends Series
From May to August, Church of the Friendly Ghost presents a series featuring female artists who push the boundaries of art and music. Too rarely are experimental art and new music events in Austin female-centric. In order to at least temporarily reject this truth, (and at best, spark a renaissance) the series stems from the desire to experience several evenings of performance from female artists.
The primary goal is to provide these artists with a space to expand their art form while providing the audience an panoptic impression of the work that women are producing in Austin and points beyond. Lady Friends will focus on media art, performance art, and music that is thought provoking and original. This series will include experimental bands, filmmakers, solo performers, and improvisers.
Additionally, CotFG aims to contrive a new point of ingression for the female arts community that coincides with a focused forum for discourse and networking. The series will culminate in August with our final show as an evening of improvisational works by an all female cast. Alissa DeRubeis and Amanda Lewis are the principal curators.

Press: Daily Texan
“Deena Hyatt, an Austin performance artist, does many things during a show. She shouts through a bullhorn. She takes pictures of her bandmates with a disposable camera. She plays the saxophone. She crouches on the floor in child’s pose, holding the microphone like a flower.
The peripatetic Hyatt, 24, lives in a log cabin off of Highway 71 and is one physics course shy of finishing her English degree at UT.
When not promoting her burgeoning performance career, she works at the Austin School for the Blind, jumps on a trampoline for exercise and plays in three bands: Nanobangbang, Gayle Gold and Low Red Center.”

FEB.2009
~ Just updated my BLOGSPHERE
~ I’m currently working on a full-length feature with Ryan Beltrán. Coincidentally, the character I’m playing’s name is Tina.
~ The movie entilted One, Two, One Two that I wrote & directed in 2007 is finally going to be done February 15th. Thanks to Bret Branon who saw my performance at Co-Lab and offered to help me finish this project. The movie chronicles the rise and demise of a romance in four colors. With no dialogue, it relies on imagery, metaphor, and interpretation. More on that soon!
~ I need a break from performing to re-charge. It won’t last too long though. At the end of February Gayle Gold will be going on a 4-day mini texas tour. So you texas out of towners stay posted!
~ Collaborating with Chris Cuellar again. Submitting a proposal to Fusebox here soon.
~ I’ve decided not to scan the Keep Your Brain Alive interactive mail zine I compiled last year; it just doesn’t work as an online entity. Instead I’ve basically made it into a book. It will exist as such unless I have the opportunity to publish more copies in the future. Until such a thing happens, it will be passed from hands to hands for one on one viewing pleasure. Which is something sacred.

YES! Cari’s solo project, Fancy Feast, has been resurrected! And we will be there and so will you. Stephanie Bonham organized this show. It’s women centric i.e. featuring bands with females. Another one of my favorite bands, No Mas Bodas will be playing first so be there on time. They are made up of four women and have a spectacularly unique sexy avant sound.

We are celebrating the OFFICIAL CD Release of Business Deal’s Band Lotto Compilation Album this Saturday at Emo’s. Four bands containing 85-100% lotto members will blow your mind while you get your hands on The Band Lotto Album before it sells out, again. Come join us in the release of an album that chronicles this social and musical experiment. More Info
This project is right up my alley. I love elements of chance, fate, and social dynamics mixed together. I love the unexpected. It goes along with my nanobangbang philosophy, and the low red center philosophy. Except on a much larger scale, with many more chance elements, and as an album instead of a performance.

January 2009
1. Just updated my Upcoming Schedule section of the site. So if you are curious who / what / where / when / how I’m performing this month, check here: Future Performances.
(OK… not the “how” part: which is just plain hard work, time, passion, drive, and luck).
I know, I still have a lot more sections to get to… Still have to capture the last Nanobangbang Show at Salvage Vanguard Theatre and post parts of that. I really need to fill in my “projects” sections. Especially with the last round of interactive art mail “Keep Your Brain Alive” AND the best excerpts of the Writing Game (Exquisite Corpse style) with Patrick, Chris, Rosemary, Chad, Winston, and Jake.

2. Tomorrow I will finish the Deenasphere Zine at our weekly arts&crafts meeting “Crapbookclub.” Which is a reference. I love Jessica Champion, and making arts with her. She wrote the intro to the zine. Chad’s going to read it and do the outro entry. Here’s a peek at what part of the cover looks like in color:
Let me know if you want one so I can get a better idea of how many to make. The price is $3-$6 sliding scale depending on what you can/want to give.

3. This event is truly special. I have a couple surprises planned.

Austin Band Lotto
Business Deal Records had a Band Lotto. I was assigned to play bass and picked to be in a band with Chris L, Erik B, and Reed P. Also, song themes were picked out of the hat. Everyone was assigned to write one song about “baby fat,” and then each individual band assigned different themes. Our theme was “Jesus.” Some other ones were: “the mall,” “pockets”, “suicide.” Our two songs are called: Baby of The Zodiac and Grandma.
It was an interesting experiment! And challenge. So many different musicians in different contexts. Can’t wait to hear the album.
Draft of the Album Cover designed by Patrick Healy:
My only regret is that I was way too busy at the time– performing with Nanobangbang, Gayle Gold and solo at Co-Lab– that I didn’t get to contribute as much as I would have liked. Learned a lesson there! I was totally swamped those two months and performanced-out.
But that was the other interesting part of the experiment; we only had two months to pull two songs together! Many people, like myself, on instruments they had *never played.* And you know, most of us also have to work for a living! Time was another challenge. And it was cool carving out a role in the given amount of time with the given people and the given instrument. (In this case for me it was icing and not cake).
For me personally, one great product of The Lotto was to work with really great song writers who have different methods than I do. Also, I ended up liking the bass so much I bought on!

Nano Bang Bang
Very excited that Church of the Friendly Ghost asked Nanobangbang to play!
November 23rd (a Sunday) at Salvage Vanguard Theater.
I’ve been composing the percussion: from bass, a spoon, tamborine stick, drum machine, and voice. And placing it in the loop pedal. I have discussed collaborations with Josh Rios, Eric Shaefer, Michael Young, Kai Mantsch, Kevin Adickes, and Chad Allen. I’m stewing up a lot of fun ideas. MORE INFO TO COME!
This venue is perfect for what I’m doing, and with the addition of my focus on percussion, I feel this will be the first real realization of Nanobangbang. Also, three is the magic number, and this is NBB’s third performance, and last– for a while; NBB will have to go on extended hiatus due to other projects and some health issues that need to be put on the forefront.
